Wire Mesh Mist Eliminator Selection, Design & Applications

A wire mesh mist eliminator, also known as a demister pad, is used to remove entrained liquid droplets from gas or vapor streams in packed towers, scrubbers, separators and other gas-liquid separation equipment.

Mist removal performance depends on multiple operating and design factors, including droplet size, gas velocity, liquid loading, mesh density, pad thickness, pressure drop, material compatibility and vessel diameter. Proper selection should therefore be based on actual process conditions rather than removal efficiency alone.

Operating Principle

As the gas or vapor stream passes through the knitted wire mesh, entrained liquid droplets impact and adhere to the wire surfaces. Smaller droplets coalesce into larger droplets, which then drain from the mist eliminator under gravity.

The wire mesh structure provides a large contact surface while maintaining relatively low gas-side pressure drop when properly selected for the operating conditions.

Materials & Construction

DAIER wire mesh mist eliminators can be manufactured in different materials and configurations according to process conditions.

Typical Materials — SS304 · SS316L · PP · Other materials upon request

Construction Options — Integral Pad · Segmented Pad · Support Grid · Hold-Down Structure

Dimensions — Custom-made according to vessel diameter, manway size and installation requirements

Pad Thickness — Selected according to separation duty, pressure-drop requirement and operating conditions

Key Selection Factors

Proper mist eliminator selection should consider:

Droplet Size · Gas Velocity · Gas Flow Rate · Liquid Loading · Operating Temperature · Operating Pressure · Allowable Pressure Drop · Mesh Density · Pad Thickness · Material Compatibility · Vessel Diameter · Fouling Tendency

For replacement or retrofit projects, existing installation dimensions, manway size, support structure and segment arrangement should also be confirmed.

Typical Applications

Wire mesh mist eliminators are commonly used in:

Scrubber Systems · Absorption Towers · Distillation Columns · Gas-Liquid Separators · Chemical Processing Equipment · Petrochemical Systems · Acid Gas Treatment · Process Gas Cleaning

They are suitable for applications where entrained liquid droplets must be separated from a gas or vapor stream before downstream processing, discharge or recovery.

Engineering Support

DAIER provides preliminary engineering support for new installations, replacement projects and tower revamps.

For preliminary mist eliminator screening, provide available process data such as gas flow rate, vessel diameter, operating temperature and pressure, droplet size, liquid loading, material requirement and allowable pressure drop.

For replacement projects, installation method, manway size, segment quantity, support grid and hold-down arrangement should also be confirmed before final design.
