How to Add a Polishing Packed Bed to an Existing Tower

How to Add a Polishing Packed Bed to an Existing Tower

A process may require a modest improvement in final removal or separation while the existing main packed bed continues to perform well.

If some unused vertical space exists, adding a smaller polishing bed can sometimes provide the additional contacting stage without redesigning the entire tower.

This differs from simply increasing the height of the existing bed because the polishing section can have its own support and liquid-distribution conditions.

Define the Incremental Duty

The polishing bed should solve a clearly quantified remaining duty.

Examples include reducing the final contaminant concentration after the main bed.

The required additional performance determines how much packing is needed.

Confirm Available Vertical Space

The tower needs room for:

  • new support;
  • packing;
  • liquid distribution if required;
  • gas disengagement.

Unused empty shell volume is not automatically available packing height.

Decide How the Polishing Bed Will Be Irrigated

If the same liquid continues upward or downward through the new section, redistribution may be required.

If a separate liquid stream is used, a new distributor may be necessary.

Check Hydraulic Pressure Drop

Any added bed increases total tower resistance.

The existing blower or vacuum system must still provide adequate margin.

Recheck Flooding

The new bed experiences the same gas flow as the main bed.

Its packing size and liquid load should therefore provide adequate hydraulic capacity.

Add Structural Support

The tower may not contain a support ring at the desired elevation.

Adding one can increase project complexity.

Where existing attachments are available, their capacity must be verified.

Consider Different Packing

A polishing bed may prioritize efficiency differently from the main bed.

However, using a different packing should be justified by process and hydraulic requirements rather than product preference.

Check Mist Eliminator Clearance

Adding a top bed can reduce the distance to the demister.

Insufficient disengagement space can increase carryover.

Plan Installation

All new components must pass through existing access.

A polishing-bed retrofit can appear simple in process calculations yet become mechanically difficult.

Verify the Incremental Benefit

After startup, compare outlet performance at similar inlet load.

The project should demonstrate that the added bed provides the expected final polishing.
