Bed Limiter RFQs: What Must Be Defined So the Supplier Does Not Design It as a Second Support Grid?
Bed limiters and packing hold-down grids are frequently misunderstood during procurement.
A vague RFQ may cause the supplier to design an unnecessarily heavy component because it interprets the limiter as another structural support.
The buyer should clearly communicate the intended function.
State That It Is Above the Bed
The RFQ should identify:
bed limiter elevation and relationship to the packed bed.
This immediately distinguishes it from the lower packing support.
Packing Type
The supplier should know the packing being restrained.
Plastic packing may require different retention geometry from ceramic or metal packing.
Packing Size
Opening dimensions should be compatible with the packing size.
This prevents individual elements from escaping through the grid.
Bed Height
The intended bed height establishes where the limiter is located.
The reference elevation should be clear.
Restraint Requirement
The supplier should understand whether the limiter is intended to:
prevent gross bed lifting, maintain packing position, or provide a more rigid hold-down function.
Different duties can require different mechanical construction.
Gas Direction and Operating Conditions
Upward gas velocity is relevant to packing movement.
The supplier should receive sufficient operating information where the restraint duty is significant.
Existing Supports
The RFQ should show:
support rings, brackets, clips, or beam locations available for the limiter.
Manway Access
As with other circular internals, large limiters normally require sectional installation.
The manway dimensions should therefore be available.
Material
The material may match:
packing, vessel, or surrounding internals,
but it should not be assumed.
State the required alloy or polymer explicitly.
