Ceramic is a brittle industrial material.

Small chips may occur during manufacturing, packing or transport even when the product remains fully usable.

A structural crack, however, can create a very different risk.

Which ceramic packing defects are cosmetic, and which should cause rejection?

The answer depends on where the damage occurs and whether it compromises structural integrity or flow geometry.

Why Ceramic Is Different from Plastic or Metal

Metal can deform before failure.

Plastic can flex.

Ceramic normally has much less ability to deform.

The engineering objective should be to control breakage within a reasonable acceptance level and prevent structurally damaged pieces from entering the tower.

Demanding perfect appearance on every piece can add cost without improving tower performance.

When Breakage Becomes a Hydraulic Problem

Large quantities of fragments are different.

Broken pieces can:

  • reduce local void space;
  • accumulate on supports;
  • increase pressure drop;
  • interfere with liquid drainage.

This is why overall shipment condition matters more than one isolated broken ring.

How Should Incoming Inspection Be Done?

A practical method is to inspect samples from several locations:

  • middle;
  • bottom;
  • different pallets or bags.

This helps distinguish one local handling incident from systematic damage.

Inspect:

  • complete pieces;
  • chips;
  • cracks;
  • fragments;
  • powder.

Photographs should document unusual damage.

Should Broken Pieces Be Loaded?

Clearly fractured pieces should normally be separated from usable packing.

Using a large amount of broken ceramic to “make up volume” can reduce bed consistency.

Small edge chips on otherwise sound pieces require different judgment from fully fractured rings or saddles.

Why Shipment Damage and Manufacturing Defects Must Be Separated

A clean fresh fracture may indicate transport impact.

A crack associated with deformation or firing defect may indicate manufacturing issues.

Correct diagnosis helps prevent the same problem from recurring.

Packaging changes will not solve a firing crack.

Is Sound Testing Useful?

Some dense ceramic components are inspected by acoustic methods.

Random thin-wall packing is more complicated because shape strongly affects sound.

Any sound-based acceptance test should therefore be validated for that specific product rather than relying on informal tapping alone.

Define Acceptance Before Shipment

For large orders, supplier and buyer should agree on:

  • sampling plan;
  • allowable minor defects;
  • unacceptable cracks;
  • handling procedure;
  • replacement policy.

This prevents disputes based on subjective photographs after delivery.
