Ceramic packing catalogues often show a column labeled:
Bulk Numbers — pcs/m³
A small packing may require tens or hundreds of thousands of pieces per cubic meter, while a large packing may require only a few thousand.
This can make the value appear ideal for purchasing calculations.
In practice, pieces per cubic meter is a bulk statistical value, not a precision piece count.
For most tower projects, ceramic packing should be purchased by bed volume or agreed mass rather than by multiplying a theoretical piece count.
What Does Bulk Number Mean?
Bulk number represents the approximate number of randomly packed elements occupying one cubic meter of bulk bed.
It includes the fact that packing elements leave void spaces between each other.
It therefore cannot be calculated simply by:
1 m³ ÷ external volume of one piece.
That method would assume the pieces fill space without irregular voids.
Random packing does not behave that way.
Why Random Orientation Matters
Ceramic rings and saddles fall into different orientations.
Some pieces may be:
- vertical;
- horizontal;
- inclined;
- touching at edges;
- partially nested.
This produces a three-dimensional arrangement that is never perfectly identical from one test container to another.
Therefore the exact number required to fill a cubic meter can vary slightly.

Packing Shape Has a Major Effect
A 50 mm Raschig Ring and a 50 mm saddle do not occupy a bulk bed in the same way.

- contact points;
- nesting behavior;
- void structure
are different.
Therefore nominal size alone cannot determine bulk number.
Why Suppliers Usually Quote by Cubic Meter
A packed tower is designed around:
bed volume.
If the tower has a known internal diameter and packing height, the required packing quantity can be calculated directly as a volume.
For example, a bed requiring 8 m³ needs approximately 8 m³ of packing plus any agreed installation allowance.
Whether that volume contains 50,000 or 500,000 individual pieces is normally secondary.

Piece count may matter for:

For a large industrial random bed, counting every piece is rarely practical or useful.

If a shipment is evaluated only by piece count, broken pieces create ambiguity.
Does two half-rings count as one piece or two?
Volume and net weight are usually more robust commercial controls for large random-packing orders.
Breakage should be handled separately through quality inspection.
Why Purchasing by Tons Can Also Be Risky
The opposite mistake is ordering only by mass.
Suppose an old tower historically used 10 tons of a thick-wall ceramic packing.
A new thinner-wall product may have lower bulk density.
Ordering the same 10 tons could supply a significantly larger bed volume.
Therefore replacement quantity should normally start from:
tower dimensions and bed volume, not historical weight alone.
How Can Bulk Number Be Verified?
A representative bulk sample can be:
- placed into a container of known volume using a defined loading method;
- leveled without excessive compaction;
- counted.
But the result remains dependent on the loading method and sample size.
A very small test container may show more variability than a larger one.
Why Catalogues Still Publish the Value
Bulk number is useful for:
- general reference;
- small-order estimation;
- comparison between sizes;
- production planning.
It simply should not be treated as an exact contractual piece count unless the supplier and buyer specifically agree to that basis.
