Standard structured packing can be priced by cubic meter.

Cut-to-size elements are different.

Once packing is manufactured to fit a specific tower, errors in diameter, element height, segmentation, or access assumptions can make the product difficult or impossible to install elsewhere.

Final data therefore need to be frozen before cutting begins.

Actual Tower ID

The supplier should know the required finished element diameter.

For existing towers, nominal vessel diameter may not be sufficiently accurate.

Field measurements can be valuable.

Required Radial Clearance

A packing element should fit without excessive force while avoiding unnecessary wall gap.

The required clearance should be part of the approved design.

Bed Height

Total bed height determines:

layer count and any nonstandard final layer.

The supplier should not simply round volume to its standard layer configuration without buyer approval.

Element Height

If the supplier uses a standard element height, this should be shown in the offer.

If the buyer requires specific layer heights, they should be frozen before production.

Segmentation

The supplier needs the manway dimensions to determine:

segment width, number of segments, and individual section geometry.

Internal Obstructions

Some towers contain:

beams, thermowells, distributors, tie rods, or other obstructions.

These may require special cutouts or element shapes.

The supplier must know this before fabrication.

Orientation

Structured packing layer orientation should be included in the installation arrangement.

Segment marks should correspond to the assembly drawing.

Edge Protection

Depending on the packing design, cut edges may need:

bands, reinforcement, or other stabilization.

The technical quotation should identify what is included.

Final Drawing Approval

Because the elements are tower-specific, production should ideally begin only after the relevant fabrication drawing has been approved.

This protects both buyer and manufacturer.
