How to Choose Random Packing Material for Chemical Scrubbers | Plastic vs Metal vs Ceramic | DAIER Separation

How to Choose Random Packing Material for Chemical Scrubbers

Selecting the correct random packing material for a chemical scrubber is one of the most critical decisions in mass transfer system design. Incorrect material selection can result in rapid corrosion, thermal deformation, pressure drop instability, increased maintenance costs, and costly shutdowns.

The three primary material families used in industrial scrubber towers are plastic, metal, and ceramic random packing. Each offers different advantages in temperature resistance, corrosion performance, mechanical strength, and service life.

This engineering guide from Pingxiang Daier Separation Tech (D-A-I-E-R Separation) explains how to select the appropriate random packing material based on process conditions, chemical compatibility, and operational requirements.

Plastic Random Packing for Chemical Scrubbers

Plastic random packing is the most common choice for scrubbers handling corrosive gases at low to moderate temperatures.

Material

Continuous Temp

Acid Resistance

Typical Applications

PP (Polypropylene)

80 – 100°C

Good (diluted acids)

FGD, HCl scrubbers, ammonia absorbers

PVC

Up to 60°C

Good

Cold water scrubbers, ambient gas treatment

PVDF

140 – 150°C

Excellent (concentrated acids)

High-temperature acid scrubbing, chlorine service

Advantages

  • Low cost
  • Lightweight
  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Easy installation
  • Low pressure drop

Limitations

  • Limited thermal stability
  • Lower mechanical strength
  • Combustible under extreme conditions

Best Applications

Plastic random packing is best suited for scrubbers operating below 100°C with acidic or alkaline gas streams where strong oxidizing acids are not present.

Metal Random Packing for High Temperature Scrubber Systems

Metal random packing is specified when higher mechanical strength, thermal stability, and gas throughput are required.

Material

Continuous Temp

Acid Resistance

Typical Applications

SS304

400 – 500°C

Moderate

General chemical scrubbers, non-chloride service

SS316L

500 – 600°C

Good (requires Mo ≥2.0%)

Chloride-containing environments, sour gas

Carbon Steel

400 – 500°C

Poor (limited to non-corrosive)

Temporary or low-corrosion service

Advantages

  • High mechanical strength
  • Excellent thermal stability
  • Suitable for higher gas velocities
  • Lower pressure drop than ceramic packing

Limitations

  • Higher cost than plastic packing
  • Corrosion risk in aggressive environments if incorrect alloy is selected

Best Applications

Metal random packing is commonly used in scrubbers operating between 100°C and 500°C where high gas throughput and structural strength are required.

Critical Material Verification for SS316L

For chloride-containing environments, SS316L random packing should always be verified with original Material Test Certificates (MTC 3.1). Molybdenum (Mo) content below 2.0% significantly reduces resistance to pitting corrosion and chloride attack in wet scrubber systems.

At Pingxiang Daier Separation Tech, SS316L materials are verified according to ASTM A240 requirements before production.

Ceramic Random Packing for Strong Acid and High Temperature Service

Ceramic random packing is often the only practical solution for scrubbers operating at very high temperatures or handling strong oxidizing acids.

Material

Continuous Temp

Acid Resistance

Typical Applications

Ceramic (68–85% Al₂O₃)

800 – 900°C

Very good

High-temperature gas scrubbing

Ceramic (92–99% Al₂O₃)

Up to 1000°C

Excellent

Sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hot corrosive gases

Advantages

  • Excellent high-temperature resistance
  • Chemically inert
  • Non-combustible
  • Excellent resistance to sulfuric acid and nitric acid

Limitations

  • Brittle structure
  • Heavier than plastic or metal packing
  • Requires careful loading and installation

Best Applications

Ceramic random packing is recommended for scrubbers operating above 500°C or handling strong oxidizing acids where plastic and metal packing would fail.

Not Recommended For

  • Hydrofluoric acid (HF)
  • Hot concentrated alkalis

How to Verify Random Packing Material Quality

When selecting random packing for industrial scrubbers, quality verification is as important as material selection itself.

Industrial buyers should verify:

  • Original material test certificates (MTC)
  • Molybdenum content for SS316L
  • Alumina content for ceramic packing
  • Dimensional tolerances
  • Bulk density
  • Pressure drop performance
  • Actual production photos instead of CGI renders

Low-quality packing materials may result in:

  • Premature corrosion
  • Packing collapse
  • Increased pressure drop
  • Reduced mass transfer efficiency
  • Unplanned shutdowns
