Structured Packing for Foaming Systems: When Low Liquid Holdup Helps

Structured packing can be attractive for foaming distillation, absorption, and stripping systems because its relatively low liquid holdup and open vapor passages can reduce the hydraulic impact of foam compared with conventional trays. It is particularly useful where foaming causes premature pressure-drop increase, entrainment, or capacity loss. However, structured packing does not eliminate foam caused by solvent contamination, surfactants, solids, degradation products, or other process problems, so the root cause should be identified before a retrofit.

Tray-to-Structured-Packing Retrofit: Increasing Column Capacity Without a Larger Diameter

Converting an existing tray column to structured packing can increase hydraulic capacity and reduce pressure drop without enlarging the tower diameter, making it attractive for debottlenecking and revamp projects. The conversion should be based on the actual tray limitation and must also review separation efficiency, packed height, liquid and vapor distribution, supports, manway access, fouling, turndown, and mechanical loads.

Structured Packing for Batch Distillation: Why Low Liquid Holdup Matters

Structured packing can be especially valuable in batch distillation because relatively low liquid holdup can reduce process inventory, improve recovery of valuable products, shorten composition transitions between product cuts, and improve dynamic response during the batch cycle. Selection should consider batch size, product value, number of fractions, required purity, operating range, liquid distribution, packed height, fouling tendency, and total system inventory rather than HETP or pressure drop alone.

Quench Tower Packing for Hot Process Gas: Ceramic Intalox Saddle vs Plastic Pall Ring

Hot process gas quench towers require random packing to be selected according to inlet and upset temperature, direct-contact cooling duty, liquid distribution, solids loading, pressure drop and fouling risk. Ceramic Intalox Saddle can provide high-temperature and chemical resistance, while Plastic Pall Ring offers low weight, corrosion resistance and economical operation once temperatures are safely within the polymer's operating range. In very dirty or heavily depositing gas streams, an unpacked spray quench may be more reliable than either packing.

RTO Ceramic Packing: When to Use Ceramic Saddles Instead of Honeycomb Media

Ceramic saddles can serve as random heat-storage media in regenerative thermal oxidizers, where they provide high-temperature thermal mass, open gas passages and potentially greater tolerance to dirty or fouling exhaust. Honeycomb ceramic offers ordered channels and high surface density and may be more attractive in relatively clean service. Selection should consider thermal duty, gas flow, pressure drop, bed depth, exhaust contamination, ceramic breakage, thermal cycling, fouling history and existing regenerative-chamber design.
