Liquid Distributor Shop Inspection: What Should Be Checked Before Shipment?

Liquid Distributor Shop Inspection: What Should Be Checked Before Shipment?

Liquid distributors are precision hydraulic tower internals.

A dimensional error that looks small in the workshop can become a significant distribution problem inside the column.

For this reason, shop inspection should cover both:

fabrication quality and hydraulic-critical geometry.

Overall Dimensions

Verify:

outside dimensions, section dimensions, elevation-related geometry, and support interfaces.

The complete distributor must fit the tower and align with the approved vessel arrangement.

Level-Critical Surfaces

Distributor performance often depends on maintaining a controlled liquid level.

Inspect for:

distortion or uneven fabrication

that could prevent the installed distributor from being level.

Orifice Diameter

Where drilled orifices form the liquid outlets, verify representative hole diameters against the approved drawing.

Excessive drilling variation can affect local discharge.

Orifice Count and Position

The correct hole size is not enough.

Inspection should confirm:

total number of outlets and their layout.

This is particularly important near:

wall zones and internal obstructions.

Feed Connection

Check:

inlet location, flange, pipe size, bolt orientation, and elevation

against the vessel interface drawing.

Trough and Pan Dimensions

Where applicable, verify:

trough width, depth, weir dimensions, and overflow features.

These may be part of the hydraulic design.

Joints and Sectional Assembly

Large distributors may be supplied in sections.

Inspect:

joint fit, bolts, gaskets, overlap, and segment marks.

A trial assembly can be valuable.

Welding

Review weld quality according to the project inspection level.

Excessive distortion from welding can be as important as surface weld appearance.

Cleanliness

Drilled holes and internal flow passages should be free of:

metal chips, weld debris, blocked openings, or foreign material.

Water Testing

If required, a separate water test can verify the assembled distributor under defined conditions.

The shop dimensional inspection should still be completed first.

Engineering Takeaway

Distributor inspection must connect fabrication with hydraulic function.

Dimensions, levelness, hole size, hole location, feed interface, joints, cleanliness, and structural condition should all be checked before release.
