A new shipment of ceramic packing may meet chemical composition, strength and dimensional specifications yet still arrive with surface dust or handling residue.

For many projects, minor ceramic dust is primarily a housekeeping issue.

In some mass-transfer applications, however, surface contamination can influence initial wetting and should be considered before startup.

This is especially relevant when the liquid system is sensitive to oils, fine particles or contamination.

Where Does Ceramic Dust Come From?

Possible sources include:

  • edge rubbing during transport;
  • minor chipping;
  • packaging movement;
  • manufacturing dust;
  • loading and unloading.

Because ceramic is brittle, small quantities of fine dust can be generated even when the packing itself is acceptable.
