Operating Temperature vs Design Temperature in Tower Packing Purchase Specifications

Temperature is one of the most common parameters in a tower packing RFQ.

Unfortunately, it is often communicated as a single number without explaining what that number represents.

For procurement, this can be dangerous.

Normal operating temperature and design temperature are not automatically the same thing.

Operating Temperature

Operating temperature describes the temperature expected during normal process operation.

It helps the supplier understand the usual service environment.

For example:

Normal operation: 65°C

This is useful information.

But it may not represent the highest temperature the packing or internal can experience.

Design Temperature

Design temperature is normally a more conservative equipment design condition established by the engineering project.

It may account for:

  • startup;
  • shutdown;
  • process upset;
  • steam cleaning;
  • regeneration;
  • temporary excursions.

The exact definition should come from the project design basis.

A packing supplier should not invent it.

Why the Difference Matters for Plastics

This distinction is particularly important for plastic packing and plastic tower internals.

A polypropylene component may perform satisfactorily at normal operating temperature but face different mechanical behavior during a higher-temperature upset.

Therefore, material suitability should be checked against the relevant maximum design condition—not only the usual process temperature.

Temperature Cannot Be Considered Alone

Chemical compatibility depends on the combination of:

  • chemical composition;
  • concentration;
  • temperature;
  • exposure time.

A material that performs well in a chemical at room temperature may behave differently at elevated temperature.

Therefore, procurement should provide both chemistry and temperature information.

Metal Equipment Also Needs Temperature Data

Metal packing may have wider temperature tolerance, but temperature can still affect:

  • alloy selection;
  • thermal expansion;
  • mechanical design;
  • corrosion.

High temperature can therefore influence more than simply whether the metal melts or softens.

Ceramic Packing

Ceramic packing is often selected for severe chemical or thermal service.

Even so, procurement should still provide design conditions.

Thermal shock, process chemistry, and mechanical requirements may remain relevant.

Do Not Ask Suppliers to Guess the Worst Case

A vague RFQ may say:

Operating temperature: 80°C

The supplier cannot know whether the tower is ever steamed at 130°C or exposed to a hotter startup condition.

The purchaser should therefore identify relevant maximum and minimum conditions.

Useful Temperature Information in an RFQ

Depending on the project, the RFQ may provide:

  • normal operating temperature;
  • maximum operating temperature;
  • design temperature;
  • minimum design temperature;
  • cleaning temperature;
  • short-term upset temperature.

Not every order requires all of these.

The goal is to provide the conditions that can affect material or mechanical suitability.

Avoid Turning Supplier Recommendations into Vessel Design Values

The packing supplier may state a recommended material temperature range.

That does not replace the process engineer's responsibility to define the tower design conditions.

Procurement should compare the required conditions with supplier capability.

The supplier should not be expected to create missing process-design data.

Document Accepted Conditions

Once a material is selected, the approved technical offer should record the temperature basis used.

This becomes important for future replacement orders.

Otherwise, years later, a new buyer may see only “PP packing” without understanding why that material was originally accepted.

Engineering Takeaway

Operating temperature tells the supplier what normally happens.

Design temperature tells the project what the equipment must safely accommodate.

Both may matter in tower packing procurement, especially for polymeric internals and corrosive service.
