Plastic Random Packing Procurement: How to Specify Molding Quality and Acceptable Defects
Plastic random packing is often purchased primarily by product type, size, and resin.

Yet the quality of injection molding can vary significantly even when those three items are correct.
A serious procurement specification should therefore distinguish between acceptable cosmetic variation and defects that can affect packing geometry, installation, or service reliability.
Plastic Packing Is a Molded Engineering Component
Most plastic random packing is produced by injection molding.
The process involves:
- resin melting;
- mold filling;
- cooling;
- ejection.
Variation in molding conditions can create defects such as:
- flash;
- short shots;
- sink marks;
- warpage;
- incomplete ribs;
- excessive gate remnants;
- discoloration;
- contamination.
Not every visible mark is a functional defect.
The objective of procurement QA is to identify which conditions affect product integrity.
Flash
Flash is thin excess plastic that forms along mold parting lines or gaps.
Minor flash may be cosmetic.
Excessive flash can:
- obstruct openings;
- create loose fragments;
- alter geometry;
- interfere with packing behavior.
A specification should therefore avoid wording such as “absolutely no flash” unless that requirement is technically necessary.
A more practical requirement is that flash shall not materially block openings, detach during normal handling, or interfere with the packing geometry.
Short Shot
A short shot occurs when the mold does not fill completely.
This is generally more serious than minor flash.
Missing ribs, incomplete walls, or partially formed structural elements can reduce mechanical strength and change the designed geometry.
Packing with significant incomplete molding should normally be treated as nonconforming.
Warpage
Plastic parts shrink during cooling.
Some dimensional variation is normal.
Severe warpage, however, may:
- collapse openings;
- change packing dimensions;
- reduce structural stability;
- create inconsistent bulk packing.
Inspection should focus on whether the part maintains the intended three-dimensional open geometry.
Gate Remnants
Injection-molded packing may show a gate area where plastic entered the mold.
A small gate vestige is normal.
A large uncontrolled projection may interfere with handling or create loose pieces.
This should be evaluated according to function rather than purely cosmetic appearance.
Color Is Not Always a Quality Indicator
PP, PVC, PVDF, and other plastic packing may be produced in different colors depending on raw material, additives, pigment, or project requirements.
Color variation alone does not prove resin quality.
If color is commercially or operationally important, it should be specified separately.
More importantly, the procurement document should clearly define the required polymer and any required resin or additive restrictions.
Control Contamination
Visible foreign matter, mixed polymers, metallic contamination, or substantial dirt may be unacceptable depending on service.
For high-purity or sensitive applications, cleanliness requirements should be defined before production.
For normal industrial scrubber service, the level of cleanliness may be different.
Again, the specification should follow the application rather than adopting unnecessary pharmaceutical-style controls.
Lot Consistency Matters
One of the best indicators of molding control is consistency within and between production lots.
A batch containing visibly different geometry, resin appearance, or dimensions may indicate mixed production.
Therefore, incoming inspection can review:
- dimensions;
- appearance;
- individual sample weight;
- geometry;
- material documentation where required.
Define Functional Acceptance Criteria
Instead of simply writing:
Good quality, no defects
a more useful specification can state:
- complete molding;
- no major blocked openings;
- no severe warpage;
- no significant cracks;
- no loose plastic fragments;
- dimensions within approved limits;
- material according to specification.
These requirements can actually be inspected.
