How to Prevent Large Plastic Tower Internals from Warping During Shipping and Storage

How to Prevent Large Plastic Tower Internals from Warping During Shipping and Storage

Plastic tower internals are attractive for corrosive service because they are:

  • lightweight;
  • corrosion resistant;
  • easy to fabricate.

However, large PP or other thermoplastic components can be more flexible than metal internals.

A distributor or grid can leave the factory within tolerance and arrive at site distorted if packaging and storage are poor.

Fabrication Accuracy Is Only Part of Quality Control

A supplier may carefully inspect:

  • diameter;
  • flatness;
  • connection points.

But if the component is transported without adequate support, these measurements may no longer be valid at installation.

Shipping therefore becomes part of the engineering process.

Large Plastic Components Can Creep Under Load

Thermoplastics can deform when subjected to sustained load.

Problems can occur if a large component is stored:

  • vertically on one edge;
  • with heavy items stacked on top;
  • supported only at a few points.

The result may be:

  • bowing;
  • twisting;
  • permanent distortion.

Temperature During Storage Matters

Plastic becomes more flexible as temperature rises.

A package stored in direct sunlight or inside a hot container may experience conditions very different from the factory workshop.

Temporary transport bracing may therefore be necessary.

Segmenting Large Internals Helps

Large tower internals are often divided into manageable sections.

Segmentation can reduce:

  • handling difficulty;
  • unsupported span;
  • packaging risk.

However, individual sections must still assemble correctly at site.

Temporary Frames Can Protect Geometry

For delicate or large components, temporary transport frames may maintain:

  • shape;
  • connection alignment;
  • flatness.

These frames can be removed during installation.

The cost of temporary bracing is often much lower than field correction.

Do Not Use Packaging Points That Distort the Product

Straps can damage plastic components if tightened excessively.

A part may be secured for transport but deformed by the securing method itself.

Packaging should distribute loads.

Storage Instructions Should Accompany the Shipment

The customer should know whether the internals should be:

  • stored horizontally;
  • kept shaded;
  • supported continuously;
  • protected from heavy stacking.

Good fabrication cannot compensate for months of poor site storage.

Distributor Levelness Is Particularly Important

A warped liquid distributor can cause unequal liquid levels.

This may produce different flow through outlet holes even if the distributor was hydraulically designed correctly.

Therefore, geometry protection is directly connected to process performance.

Inspect Before Installation

After unpacking, check:

  • obvious deformation;
  • connection alignment;
  • flatness;
  • cracks;
  • shipping damage.

Minor temporary deformation may sometimes recover, but significant distortion should be evaluated before installation.

Final Engineering Principle

For large thermoplastic internals, the final product quality includes not only how the component is fabricated but also how its geometry is preserved until installation.
