Structured packing can be used in ammonia-water absorption refrigeration rectifiers to remove water from ammonia-rich vapor leaving the generator before the vapor reaches the condenser and evaporator. Structured Packing at High Temperature: Thermal Expansion, Bed Clearance and Internals Fit

Thermal expansion in high-temperature packed columns is primarily a mechanical fit and tower-internals issue. Structured packing, vessel shells, support grids, bed limiters, distributors and collectors can expand differently as temperature changes, especially when different materials are used.
