PP Homopolymer vs PP Copolymer: What Should a Tower Packing Purchase Specification Say?

Polypropylene is widely used for random packing, demisters, support grids, and other plastic tower internals.

Yet many purchase specifications state only:

Material: PP

For some applications this may be adequate.

For others, the polymer type can matter.

The procurement question is not which PP is universally better.

The question is whether the project requires a specific resin family and, if it does, how that requirement should be written.

“PP” Is a Polymer Family

Polypropylene can be supplied in different formulations.

Two common categories are:

  • homopolymer PP;
  • copolymer PP.

They may differ in characteristics such as:

  • stiffness;
  • impact behavior;
  • temperature behavior;
  • processing performance.

The relevant requirement depends on the product design and operating environment.

Do Not Add Resin Detail Without a Reason

A procurement team should not specify a particular PP subtype simply because it appears more technical.

Unnecessary restrictions can:

  • reduce supplier options;
  • increase cost;
  • create sourcing difficulty.

If the product has already been qualified using a particular resin family, however, the specification should preserve that requirement.

Ask the Supplier to Declare the Resin Type

One useful approach is:

Material: Polypropylene. Supplier shall state resin type and grade used for manufacture.

This creates transparency without automatically restricting all bids.

If a particular grade is mandatory, the document can instead state it directly.

Material Selection Must Consider Service

The engineering team should consider:

  • chemical exposure;
  • normal temperature;
  • maximum temperature;
  • mechanical loading;
  • installation environment.

The supplier should receive this operating envelope.

Simply asking for “PP packing” without service conditions pushes too much material responsibility onto the manufacturer.

Resin Grade and Product Design Are Connected

A molded packing geometry is developed around a particular material behavior.

Switching resin type may affect:

  • stiffness;
  • dimensional stability;
  • molding shrinkage;
  • impact resistance.

Therefore, significant resin changes should not be made after technical approval without review.

Material Documentation

Plastic raw materials do not use the same certification approach as stainless steel.

Depending on project requirements, the supplier may provide:

  • resin manufacturer datasheet;
  • batch information;
  • certificate of analysis;
  • supplier declaration.

The appropriate level should be defined.

Recycled Content Must Be Addressed Separately

PP subtype and recycled content are two different questions.

A product can be made from:

  • virgin homopolymer;
  • virgin copolymer;
  • recycled PP;
  • blended resin.

If the project requires virgin resin, that should be stated explicitly.

Writing only “PP homopolymer” does not automatically define recycled-content requirements.

Color and Additives

Pigments, UV stabilizers, conductive additives, or other modifiers may change the final formulation.

If these matter to the application, they should be documented.

A polymer procurement specification should therefore distinguish between:

  • base resin;
  • additives;
  • color;
  • recycled content.

Supplier Change Control

For repeat orders, changes in resin formulation should be disclosed if the approved product depends on the original material.

This is especially useful where the product has already passed customer testing.

“PP” may be sufficient for many standard tower-packing orders, but it is not always a complete material specification.

Where resin type matters, the buyer should define whether homopolymer or copolymer is required, along with service conditions and any restrictions on additives or recycled material.
