How to Specify PTFE Random Packing for Procurement

PTFE is used in highly corrosive or otherwise demanding services where material compatibility is a major concern.

Because PTFE packing can be expensive, procurement should clearly define what is being purchased.

A specification such as:

PTFE Raschig Ring, 25 mm

may still leave questions about:

  • resin quality;
  • fillers;
  • dimensions;
  • density;
  • manufacturing method.

Virgin vs Filled PTFE

PTFE products can be manufactured from:

  • virgin PTFE;
  • modified formulations;
  • filled PTFE.

Fillers may change:

  • mechanical behavior;
  • wear properties;
  • chemical compatibility;
  • color.

Therefore, if virgin unfilled PTFE is required, the specification should state this explicitly.

Do Not Accept “Teflon” as the Only Material Description

Commercial terminology is frequently used loosely.

A procurement specification should use the actual polymer designation:

rather than relying only on a trade name.

This is particularly important when global suppliers are involved.

Avoid Uncontrolled Filled Grades

“PTFE-based” is not the same as “virgin PTFE.”

Material Documentation

Depending on the project, the buyer may request:

  • resin declaration;
  • material datasheet;
  • supplier certificate;
  • batch traceability.

The documentation level should reflect material cost and process criticality.

Quantity Basis

For expensive PTFE packing, buyers should clearly define whether the order quantity is:

  • pieces;
  • kilograms;
  • cubic meters.

Conversion between these units should use the approved packing geometry.

This prevents commercial disputes.
