Structured packing is normally supplied as individual elements installed one above another inside the tower.

The overall packed-bed height may be several meters, but the individual element height is usually much smaller.

This creates two procurement variables that should not be ignored:

element height and layer orientation.

Both affect manufacturing, installation, handling, and replacement compatibility.

Bed Height and Element Height Are Different

If a tower requires 6,000 mm of structured packing, that does not mean the supplier manufactures one 6,000 mm-high packing element.

The bed is divided into multiple layers.

The procurement specification should therefore distinguish:

  • total packed-bed height;
  • nominal element height;
  • number of layers.

This becomes important when calculating quantities and installation sequence.

Why Element Height Matters

Element height affects:

  • manufacturing;
  • handling;
  • packaging;
  • manway entry;
  • layer arrangement;
  • site installation.

A layer that is too tall may be difficult to handle.

A layer that is too short may increase the number of joints and installation steps.

For replacement projects, the new element height may also need to fit the existing support and bed arrangement.

Manufacturers may have standard element heights.

Orientation Between Layers

Structured packing layers are normally rotated relative to adjacent layers.

This alternating arrangement helps redistribute gas and liquid pathways through the bed.

If all layers are installed in the same direction, the internal flow pattern may not match the intended design.

Therefore, procurement should ensure that installation orientation is clearly communicated.

Marking Is Often More Valuable Than Long Instructions

For large towers, hundreds of packing segments may arrive at site.

A practical marking system can include:

  • layer number;
  • segment number;
  • orientation arrow;
  • tower identification;
  • installation sequence.

This reduces the risk of site errors.

A good procurement specification should therefore address not only manufacturing but also how the packing will be identified during installation.

Partial Layers Need Special Control

The total required bed height does not always divide exactly by the manufacturer's standard element height.

This can create a partial final layer.

If that possibility exists, the project should define how it will be handled.

Options may include:

  • custom element height;
  • revised layer distribution;
  • adjustment elsewhere in the internal arrangement.

The solution should be approved before production.

Do Not Let the Supplier Infer Total Quantity

An RFQ should not provide only tower diameter and bed height and assume the supplier will interpret the entire configuration correctly.

A technical offer should clearly state:

  • total bed volume;
  • element height;
  • number of layers;
  • number of segments per layer.

This becomes part of the buyer's technical review.

Replacement Projects Need Existing Arrangement Data

For replacement service, the supplier should ideally receive:

  • tower ID;
  • existing layer height;
  • existing segment arrangement;
  • manway size;
  • support elevation;
  • total bed height.

Without this information, a replacement packing may fit hydraulically but create installation problems.

Procurement Acceptance

Element height is directly measurable.

Therefore, unlike some hydraulic parameters, it can be treated as a manufacturing acceptance item.

The approved drawing should define:

  • nominal height;
  • tolerance;
  • segment arrangement.

Layer orientation is normally controlled through marking and installation documentation rather than factory dimensional inspection.
