Suspended vs Support-Ring-Mounted Liquid Distributors
A liquid distributor may be supported from a tower support ring, suspended from beams or rods, mounted on lugs, or connected through a purpose-designed combination of these methods.
The mounting arrangement affects levelness, structural load, vapor flow, installation time and future maintenance.
Support-Ring-Mounted Distributors
A ring-mounted distributor transfers its load directly to a circumferential ledge or support ring attached to the tower shell.
Potential advantages include:
Simple vertical load path
Compact installation height
Relatively straightforward panel support
Fewer overhead suspension members
Convenient arrangement for segmented pans
Important limitations include:
Dependence on support-ring elevation and flatness
Possible vapor blockage at the perimeter
Difficulty adjusting local elevation

Need to seal or manage the annular perimeter
Potential interference with existing tray rings
A distributor cannot be more level than the surface supporting it unless an adjustment system is provided.
Suspended Distributors
A suspended distributor hangs from beams, rods or other upper supports.

Less dependence on an imperfect shell ring
Flexibility in some retrofit configurations
Possible reduction of perimeter support blockage

A support method should state how the distributor will actually be leveled.

Adjustment hardware must remain secure after commissioning. An unlocked threaded rod can change position under vibration.

Hydraulic Effects of the Support System
Supports can reduce effective vapor area and create local high-velocity zones. They may also block liquid outlets or force drip points away from their intended positions.

Nominal distributor free area should not exclude its support system.
