Suspended vs Support-Ring-Mounted Liquid Distributors

A liquid distributor may be supported from a tower support ring, suspended from beams or rods, mounted on lugs, or connected through a purpose-designed combination of these methods.

The mounting arrangement affects levelness, structural load, vapor flow, installation time and future maintenance.

Support-Ring-Mounted Distributors

A ring-mounted distributor transfers its load directly to a circumferential ledge or support ring attached to the tower shell.

Potential advantages include:

Simple vertical load path

Compact installation height

Relatively straightforward panel support

Fewer overhead suspension members

Convenient arrangement for segmented pans

Important limitations include:

Dependence on support-ring elevation and flatness

Possible vapor blockage at the perimeter

Difficulty adjusting local elevation

Sensitivity to shell ovality

Need to seal or manage the annular perimeter

Potential interference with existing tray rings

A distributor cannot be more level than the surface supporting it unless an adjustment system is provided.

Suspended Distributors

A suspended distributor hangs from beams, rods or other upper supports.

Potential advantages include:

Adjustable elevation

Ability to level individual troughs

Less dependence on an imperfect shell ring

Flexibility in some retrofit configurations

Possible reduction of perimeter support blockage

Potential disadvantages include:

Additional vertical space

Loads transferred to upper beams

Rods or hangers obstructing vapor or access

Suspension members must not interfere with the packing above, the collector below or the required drip pattern.

The Correct Choice Depends on the Tower

Vapor-flow area

Thermal expansion

Field welding restrictions

Maintenance access

Small one-piece distributors may also be flange-mounted or supported through the tower nozzle, but this approach requires careful interface design.

Level Adjustment Must Be Defined

A support method should state how the distributor will actually be leveled.

Possible arrangements include:

Shims on a support ring

Adjustable support clips

Threaded suspension rods

Turnbuckles

Leveling screws

Adjustable beam seats

Adjustment hardware must remain secure after commissioning. An unlocked threaded rod can change position under vibration.

Leveling points should be accessible, and their adjustment range should cover realistic shell and support tolerances.

Check the Complete Load Path

For a ring-mounted distributor, verify:

Ring strength

Attachment to the shell

Panel bearing area

Local shell load

Uplift restraint

For a suspended distributor, verify:

Beam capacity

Rod tension

Connection strength

Load sharing

Eccentric loading

Vibration

Accidental loss of one support

The design should also define whether the feed pipe is independently supported.

Hydraulic Effects of the Support System

Supports can reduce effective vapor area and create local high-velocity zones. They may also block liquid outlets or force drip points away from their intended positions.

Rods and clips

Support-ring projection

Panel overlaps

Gaskets

Packing retainer

Feed piping

Nominal distributor free area should not exclude its support system.

Retrofit Considerations

In an existing tower, the preferred hydraulic distributor may not match the available support geometry. The decision may involve:

Adding removable support beams

Suspending the distributor without field welding

Modifying segmentation for the manway
