How to Specify Weld and Filler Materials for Stainless Steel Tower Internals
When a purchase order specifies:
Material: SS316L
the buyer may assume that the entire fabricated internal is automatically 316L.
That may not be true unless weld consumables are also controlled.
For fabricated:
- liquid distributors;
- collectors;
- support grids;
- vane separators;
- frames,
welding becomes part of the material system.
Base Metal Alone Does Not Define the Welded Assembly
A fabricated component includes:
- base metal;
- weld metal;
- heat-affected zones.
Therefore, corrosion resistance and mechanical integrity depend partly on welding practice.
The procurement specification should define whether weld filler must be compatible with the specified base alloy.
Filler Selection Should Follow the Welding Procedure
The purchaser normally does not need to dictate every welding consumable brand.
Instead, the project may require:

If this manufacturing method is used, the supplier should identify it where project welding requirements are strict.
The procurement specification should focus on the approved fabrication procedure rather than assuming every weld uses filler metal.
Dissimilar-Metal Welds
Some internals may connect different grades.
For example:
- one alloy internal connected to another stainless component.
The welding procedure should account for this combination.
The supplier should not select filler solely based on convenience.

Not every standard tower internal needs the complete package.
The document level should match project criticality.
Post-Weld Treatment
Stainless steel fabrication may require:

If the process or customer standard requires these treatments, they should appear in the purchase specification.
The supplier should not assume them automatically.
Inspection
Weld inspection may include:

The extent should be defined by the project specification.
