ASTM vs EN Stainless Steel Grades: How to Avoid Material Equivalence Errors in Procurement
International tower-internals projects often involve more than one material standard.
A project datasheet may use an ASTM designation.
A European drawing may use an EN grade.
A Chinese supplier may purchase material documented under a third standard.
This creates an important procurement question:
When can two stainless steel grades be treated as equivalent?
The safest answer is:
Not simply because their commercial names appear similar.
Similar Is Not the Same as Contractually Equivalent
Engineering teams frequently encounter comparisons such as:
- ASTM/AISI 316L;
- EN 1.4404;
- other national designations.
These may be widely treated as comparable grades.
However, a procurement specification should not rely on an informal equivalence assumption.
Different standards may define:
- chemical composition ranges;
- mechanical properties;
- product conditions;
- testing;
- certification requirements.
For many applications, the differences may have no practical effect.
But the decision should belong to the project engineering requirements—not to a supplier making an undocumented substitution.
Identify the Governing Standard
A strong purchase specification should identify:
material grade + governing standard
rather than the grade name alone.
This becomes especially useful when several suppliers from different countries participate in a project.
If the buyer accepts equivalent national standards, the specification can say so explicitly.
For example:
Alternative equivalent material standards may be proposed subject to purchaser approval.
This preserves commercial flexibility without losing technical control.
Why This Matters in Global Sourcing
Tower packing and internals are frequently sourced internationally.
An EPC contractor may issue specifications based on European standards while the manufacturer normally buys material certified under ASTM-compatible or Chinese standards.
If the rule is unclear, two undesirable outcomes are possible:
The supplier prices unnecessarily expensive special material even though an accepted equivalent exists.
Or the supplier substitutes a local grade without telling the purchaser.
Neither is ideal.
Material Equivalence Should Be Documented
If an alternative grade is proposed, the supplier should provide sufficient information for review.
This can include:
- material designation;
- applicable standard;
- chemistry;
- mechanical properties where relevant;
- certificate format.
The project engineer can then determine whether the proposed material is acceptable.
The approval should be recorded.
Do Not Use Internet Equivalence Tables as the Contract
Online cross-reference charts can be useful for preliminary engineering.
They should not automatically become the contractual acceptance basis.
Many charts simplify material relationships.
A “closest equivalent” is not necessarily an exact standard-to-standard replacement.
Procurement should therefore return to the actual governing material standards where the distinction matters.
Product Form Still Matters
Even when the grade chemistry is comparable, the relevant standard may differ according to whether the material is:
- sheet;
- wire;
- bar;
- tube;
- forging.
This is especially relevant to tower internals because a single assembly may contain several product forms.
The purchaser should avoid writing one standard for the entire assembly if that standard does not actually apply to every component.
Certification Requirements Can Differ
A buyer may require documentation according to a particular certification system.
Therefore, material acceptance may depend not only on chemistry but also on whether the certificate contains:
- heat identification;
- test results;
- manufacturer information;
- traceability.
This should be clarified at RFQ stage.
Avoid Duplicate Material Requirements
A specification sometimes contains multiple conflicting descriptions, for example:
SS316L / 1.4404 / local equivalent / ASTM
without explaining which one controls.
The supplier then has to guess.
A better document states:
- primary required designation;
- accepted equivalent basis;
- approval procedure for deviations.
Technical Bid Comparison
When suppliers use different standards, the purchaser should compare them on the same basis.
A bid should not automatically be rejected simply because the certificate uses a different national standard.
Likewise, a different designation should not automatically be accepted merely because the supplier calls it equivalent.
The comparison must be documented.
