SS304, SS304L, SS316 or SS316L: How Should Stainless Steel Grade Be Written in Tower Internals Procurement?
Stainless steel is one of the most common materials used for random packing, structured packing, demisters, distributors, support grids, and other tower internals.
Yet a surprising number of purchase orders contain only a short material description such as:
SUS316orStainless Steel 316
For routine purchasing this may appear sufficient.
For engineering procurement, it can leave unnecessary ambiguity.
The objective of a good material specification is not to explain what each stainless steel grade is. It is to make sure the material purchased, documented, fabricated, and inspected is the material actually approved for the project.
Use a Complete Grade Designation
A procurement document should identify the stainless steel grade clearly.
Examples include:
- 304;
- 304L;
- 316;
- 316L.
The “L” designation should not be omitted if the low-carbon grade is specifically required.
Although 304 and 304L, or 316 and 316L, belong to closely related alloy families, procurement should not assume they are automatically interchangeable.
Where the project specification requires a specific grade, the supplier should manufacture according to that grade unless a deviation is formally approved.
Avoid Using Only a Commercial Name
Terms such as:
stainless steel,SS316,orfood-grade stainless
may not be precise enough for an engineered tower-internals order.
The buyer should define:
- grade;
- applicable material standard where required;
- product form;
- documentation requirements.
For example, the material requirement for thin sheet used in structured packing may be documented differently from wire used in a demister.
Material Grade and Product Form Should Be Linked
The same alloy may be supplied as:
- sheet;
- strip;
- wire;
- plate;
- bar;
- pipe.
A material certificate should correspond to the actual product form used in fabrication.
This is especially important when a tower-internals assembly contains several different components.
For example, a distributor may include:
- plate;
- pipe;
- reinforcement;
- bolts.
The procurement specification should make clear which items must use the specified alloy.
Do Not Assume “316” Means “316L”
Some suppliers may commercially refer to both as “316 stainless.”
That is not sufficient where the project requires 316L.
If low-carbon material is required, the purchase order and material certificate requirement should state it explicitly.
Likewise, if 304L is specified, supplying standard 304 should not be treated as automatically acceptable.
Define Whether Substitution Is Allowed
A useful procurement clause is:
No substitution of material grade without purchaser approval.
This prevents informal changes during sourcing or fabrication.
A supplier may occasionally propose an alternative grade because of:
- material availability;
- lead time;
- cost;
- equivalent corrosion resistance.
That proposal can be evaluated.
But it should be a documented deviation rather than an invisible replacement.
What Documentation Should Be Requested?
The required documentation depends on project risk.
Possible requirements include:
- mill certificate;
- material certificate;
- supplier declaration;
- heat number traceability;
- PMI for critical service.
Not every small standard order needs the highest level of traceability.
However, the required documentation should be defined before production.
Fabricated Assemblies Need More Than One Material Check
For a distributor or support grid, confirming the main plate material may not be enough.
The buyer may also need to confirm:
- pipe material;
- fastener material;
- weld consumables;
- clips;
- reinforcement.
This is particularly important in corrosive service.
Avoid Material Ambiguity in Repeat Orders
Repeat orders can create another problem.
A buyer may state:
same as last order
without attaching the previous approved specification.
Over time, personnel and suppliers change.
A better approach is to preserve the approved grade and relevant material standard in the new PO.
That gives future procurement teams a traceable basis.
Receiving Inspection
Receiving inspection may verify:
- material markings;
- certificates;
- heat numbers where applicable;
- PMI where required;
- correspondence with the approved BOM.
The purpose is not to perform laboratory chemistry testing on every piece.
It is to confirm that the delivered material matches the agreed documentation and project requirements.
