How to Specify Acid Resistance for Ceramic Tower Packing
Ceramic packing is frequently selected for acidic service.
Datasheets may therefore state values such as:
Acid resistance ≥ 99.5%
This looks like a straightforward procurement requirement.
But without a defined test method, the number can be difficult to compare between suppliers.
Acid Resistance Is a Test Result
Unlike product diameter, acid resistance is not measured directly with a caliper.
It is determined through a laboratory test.
Therefore, the procurement specification should define:
- test standard or method;
- test medium;
- result basis;
- acceptance value.
A percentage without a method is incomplete.
Do Not Compare Different Test Methods Directly
Different procedures may use different:
- acids;
- concentrations;
- exposure times;
- temperatures;
- specimen preparation;
- calculation methods.
Two suppliers could therefore report different percentages without the difference representing actual service performance.
Technical bid comparison should first confirm the test basis.
Acid Type Matters
The process may contain:
- sulfuric acid;
- hydrochloric acid;
- nitric acid;
- mixed acids.
A standard ceramic acid-resistance test may not reproduce the exact service chemistry.
Therefore, the test result should be treated as material-characterization data unless a project-specific test has been designed.
Temperature Matters
Chemical attack can change with temperature.
A ceramic that performs well in a standard laboratory acid-resistance test should still be evaluated against the actual operating temperature.
The buyer should provide service conditions to the supplier.
Use a Minimum Acceptance Limit Carefully
If the project specification genuinely requires:
Acid resistance ≥ X%
the supplier should know:
- which test method controls;
- whether third-party testing is required;
- how often testing is performed.
Otherwise, the same percentage can mean different things.
Batch Testing
For large orders, the buyer may require testing by:
- production lot;
- shipment;
- representative batch.
The frequency should be practical and proportional to risk.
There is rarely value in testing every individual packing piece.
Supplier Historical Data
For standardized ceramic products, a supplier may have established routine test data.
The project can decide whether:
- supplier certificate is sufficient;
- independent laboratory verification is required.
This should be agreed before order placement.
Acid Resistance Does Not Prove Alkali Resistance
This distinction is important.
A ceramic that performs extremely well in acid testing may show very different behavior in strong alkaline service.
Therefore, acid and alkali resistance should be treated as separate properties.
Procurement Documentation
The final test report should ideally identify:
- sample;
- batch;
- test method;
- result;
- acceptance criterion;
- date.
This gives the buyer a traceable quality record.

Acid resistance is useful only when the test method and acceptance basis are defined.
A high percentage printed in a catalog should not automatically become a contractual performance guarantee for every acidic process.
