How to Specify Alkali Resistance for Ceramic Tower Packing
Ceramic tower packing is often associated with excellent chemical resistance.
This can lead purchasers to assume that strong acid resistance automatically means strong alkali resistance.
That assumption can be dangerous.
Alkaline attack can behave differently from acidic attack, and ceramic composition can respond very differently to the two environments.
Alkali Resistance Is a Separate Procurement Property
If the tower will operate in alkaline service, the RFQ should identify:
- chemical;
- concentration;
- temperature;
- exposure conditions.
The buyer should not rely only on the supplier's acid-resistance value.
Define the Test Method
An alkali-resistance percentage has little meaning without a defined test method.
The method can affect results through:
- alkali concentration;
- exposure temperature;
- test duration;
- calculation basis.
The purchase specification should therefore define or reference the required test procedure.
Why This Matters Commercially
A ceramic packing supplier may have excellent standard acid-resistance data but relatively limited alkali-resistance capability.
If the RFQ does not state the real alkaline service, the supplier may quote a standard ceramic product that is not appropriate for the project.
This can waste significant time.
Do Not Use “Chemical Resistant Ceramic” as the Requirement
That phrase is too broad.
A technically useful RFQ should identify the actual corrosive environment.
For example:
NaOH solution, concentration range, operating temperature
gives the supplier a real basis for review.
Standard Test vs Actual Process
Even a standardized alkali-resistance test does not reproduce every industrial service.
It is primarily useful for:
- material comparison;
- production quality control;
- qualification.
For unusually severe service, project-specific material testing may be more appropriate.
Minimum Value
If the project defines a minimum acceptable alkali-resistance percentage, this requirement should be confirmed before the commercial quotation becomes final.
A supplier whose standard material cannot meet the requirement may need to propose:
- another ceramic body;
- a different material;
- another packing technology.
This is better discovered before order placement.
Certificate Requirements
The buyer may request:
- supplier test certificate;
- independent laboratory report;
- production-lot result.
The documentation level depends on project importance.
The PO should define it.
Do Not Accept an Unrelated Certificate
One frequent procurement error is receiving a test report that proves:
- acid resistance;
- compression strength;
while the actual purchase requirement is alkali resistance.
Every certificate should be checked against the parameter it is supposed to verify.
Lot Traceability
Where chemical-resistance testing is critical, the test report should ideally be traceable to the actual production lot.
Otherwise, a certificate from an unrelated historical batch provides weaker assurance.
