Wet ceramic packing can be vulnerable to freeze-thaw damage when water is trapped in pores, cracks, deposits or bed voids. For outdoor cold-weather shutdowns, control drainage and moisture and avoid rapid reheating of a deeply chilled ceramic bed.

Steam cleaning ceramic packing can be practical, but rapid steam introduction or rapid cold-water rinsing can create thermal shock. Control temperature transitions, maintain drainage and consider bed temperature distribution rather than relying only on maximum ceramic temperature.

Identify the deposit before cleaning ceramic packing. Select chemistry that is compatible with both the foulant and the ceramic, control temperature and mechanical impact, rinse thoroughly and inspect for damage before restart.

Used ceramic packing can sometimes be reused after shutdown if it remains chemically sound, mechanically intact, dimensionally acceptable and cleanable. Inspect multiple bed locations and investigate the reason for shutdown before deciding.

Distinguish chemical attack, thermal shock and mechanical breakage by combining fracture appearance, bed location, process history, pressure-drop trends and comparison with unused samples. Replacement without root-cause analysis risks repeating the failure.
