Ceramic Random Packing RFQs: What Must Be Defined Before Price Comparison?
Ceramic random packing looks like a simple commodity.
A purchaser may request:
50 × 50 mm Ceramic Raschig Ring, 30 tonnes.
Several suppliers then return prices per tonne.
At first glance, comparison appears easy.
In reality, ceramic procurement can differ significantly in material quality, geometry, chemical resistance, packaging, and quantity basis.
A low price per tonne may therefore not represent the same product.
Size Must Be More Than a Commercial Label
For replacement projects, the buyer should confirm:
outside diameter, height, wall thickness, and permitted dimensional variation.
Ceramic firing causes normal manufacturing variation.
Therefore, exact machined-component tolerances should not be assumed.
Weight or Volume?
Ceramic packing is often priced by tonne because the product is heavy.
But the tower design usually depends on packed volume.
The RFQ should therefore connect:
required tonnes and required m³,
or require the supplier to state the typical bulk density used for conversion.
Otherwise, a heavier packing design may appear cheaper per tonne while providing fewer cubic meters.
Ceramic Body Requirements
The buyer should determine which quality parameters are contractually important.
These may include:
chemical composition, acid resistance, alkali resistance, water absorption, and mechanical strength.
Not every application requires all of them.
But if one property is critical, it should be stated before the supplier finalizes the quotation.
Chemical Service Is Essential
“Ceramic” does not mean universal resistance to every chemical environment.
Strong alkaline service in particular may require close technical review.
The RFQ should therefore provide:
chemical composition, concentration, and temperature.
This prevents the wrong ceramic body from being priced.
Breakage Acceptance
Ceramic is brittle.
The RFQ should define whether any breakage requirement applies:
at factory packing, after transport, or during receiving inspection.
If a maximum percentage is specified, the calculation basis should also be defined.
Otherwise, a number such as “2% maximum breakage” can create later disputes.
Packaging Is Part of Product Protection
The quotation should identify the packaging method.
Possible options include:
woven bags, jumbo bags, pallets, cartons, crates, or combinations.
Different methods have different costs and breakage risks.
For export projects, pallet and container-loading requirements can materially affect the final quotation.
Test Reports
If the buyer requires a specific:
COA, laboratory test, third-party report, or lot-based certificate,
this should be included before pricing.
Testing can add both cost and lead time.
Samples Before Bulk Purchase
For unusual chemical requirements, a sample test may be more valuable than negotiating a large order based only on generic catalog data.
The RFQ can distinguish:
sample qualification stage and bulk commercial stage.
This avoids treating preliminary material data as final project acceptance.

Ceramic packing quotations should be compared on both a commercial and technical basis.
Price per tonne alone is not enough.
The buyer must know what ceramic body, bulk volume, quality criteria, breakage basis, and packaging method each supplier has actually included.
