Should Packing Factor Be a Guaranteed Procurement Parameter?
Packing factor is widely used in packed-column engineering.
It may appear in vendor literature, hydraulic calculations, process simulations, and replacement specifications.
Because the value is important in engineering calculations, procurement teams sometimes assume it should also be treated as a directly inspectable product guarantee.
That assumption needs care.
Packing Factor Is Not Like Diameter or Thickness
A diameter can be measured with a caliper.
Sheet thickness can be measured with a micrometer.
Packing factor is different.
It is an engineering parameter associated with the hydraulic characteristics and geometry of a packing.

This is particularly important when the value comes from an old process datasheet and the original manufacturer is unknown.
Why This Creates Problems in Replacement Projects
Suppose an existing tower specification contains a packing factor.
A new supplier proposes a geometrically similar random packing but publishes a slightly different number.
Does that automatically mean the product is unsuitable?
Not necessarily.
The difference may originate from:

What Can Be Controlled During Production?
Instead of trying to inspect the packing factor directly, procurement can control the physical characteristics from which the packing identity is derived, such as:
- size;
- geometry;
- wall thickness;
- material;
- dimensional consistency.
If production changes these characteristics significantly, the approved hydraulic data may no longer be valid.
This is why change-control requirements are often more valuable than simply repeating a packing-factor number in the PO.
When Should the Value Appear in the Specification?
Packing factor should appear when it has a genuine engineering purpose.

Supplier shall identify any difference between the offered packing and the reference hydraulic data, including packing factor where applicable.
For controlled designs:
No change in packing geometry affecting approved hydraulic characteristics shall be made without purchaser approval.
This wording addresses the real engineering risk.
