Void fraction appears on almost every serious tower-packing datasheet.

It indicates how much of the packed volume remains open for gas and liquid flow.

Because the number directly relates to the open nature of the packing, procurement engineers often use it when screening proposed equivalents.

But simply writing a minimum percentage in a purchase order does not always create a complete acceptance requirement.

Void Fraction Is a Geometry Property

For packing procurement, void fraction mainly reflects the relationship between:

  • the bulk volume occupied by the packing;
  • and the solid material contained within that volume.

A high open volume is generally associated with favorable hydraulic characteristics, but void fraction should not be interpreted in isolation.

A packing with a very high void fraction is not automatically the best packing for every service.

Efficiency, wetting behavior, mechanical strength, liquid distribution, and packing geometry also matter.

Why Catalog Values May Not Match Exactly

Two manufacturers may publish slightly different void-fraction values for apparently similar products.

The Relationship with Bulk Density

Void fraction and bulk density are related to packing construction, but they should not be treated as interchangeable parameters.

A change in sheet thickness or material can alter bulk density while the geometry remains similar.

Likewise, two packing designs can have similar bulk densities but different open structures.

Therefore, procurement review should examine the complete data set rather than attempting to validate one parameter from another with oversimplified assumptions.

Equivalent Packing Requires More Than Matching One Percentage

When several suppliers propose an equivalent packing, matching the void-fraction number does not prove full equivalence.

The buyer should also compare:

  • nominal size;
  • geometry;
  • specific surface area;
  • material;
  • bulk density;
  • hydraulic information;
  • installation requirements.

Each version serves a different purpose.
