Plastic Pall Ring Material Selection Guide (PP vs PVC vs PVDF) | Corrosion Resistance & Temperature Limits – DAIER

Plastic Pall Ring Material Selection for Corrosive Towers

(PP vs PVC vs PVDF – Engineering Guide by DAIER)

Plastic Pall rings are widely used in gas scrubbing, acid absorption, and wastewater stripping towers. However, material selection is the most common failure point.

Choosing the wrong material can lead to:

  • Packing deformation
  • Chemical degradation
  • Pressure drop increase
  • Tower shutdown

This guide compares PP, PVC, and PVDF Pall rings from an engineering perspective.

1. PP (Polypropylene) – Cost-Effective Standard

PP is the most widely used plastic packing material due to its balance between cost and performance.

Typical Performance:

Property

Value

Continuous temperature

80 – 100°C

Chemical resistance

Good for diluted acids & alkalis

Limitation

Not suitable for strong oxidizing acids

Typical Applications:

  • FGD (Flue Gas Desulfurization)
  • Ammonia scrubbers
  • General chemical absorption

👉 Engineering Note:PP is acceptable for most systems below 80°C, but temperature spikes above 90°C will cause softening and deformation.

2. PVC – Low Temperature, Budget Systems

PVC is selected when cost is critical and operating conditions are mild.

Property

Value

Max temperature

≤ 60°C

Chemical resistance

Good

Limitation

Poor thermal stability

Typical Applications:

  • Cold water scrubbers
  • Ambient gas treatment systems

👉 Engineering Note:PVC is not recommended for fluctuating temperature systems.

3. PVDF – High-End Chemical Resistance

PVDF is used in aggressive environments where PP and PVC fail.

Property

Value

Continuous temperature

140 – 150°C

Chemical resistance

Excellent (including strong acids)

Limitation

Higher cost

Typical Applications:

  • Concentrated H₂SO₄ / HNO₃ systems
  • Chlorine / oxidizing environments
  • High-temperature acid scrubbing

👉 Engineering Insight:In oxidizing acid systems, PP lifetime < 6 months, while PVDF can exceed 3–5 years.

🚨 Critical Selection Mistakes (Most Buyers Make)

  1. Ignoring temperature peaks→ Leads to packing collapse
  2. Ignoring oxidizing acids→ PP fails rapidly
  3. Using plastic in deep beds (>4m)→ Mechanical compression risk
  4. Ignoring fire risk→ Plastics are combustible
