Most buyers specify SS316L tower packing.
Almost none verify the molybdenum (Mo) content.
That is where failures begin.
In corrosive environments, the difference between Mo 1.6% and Mo ≥2.0% is not minor — it is the difference between months and years of service life.
What Molybdenum Does in SS316L
Molybdenum is the key alloying element that gives SS316L its corrosion resistance, especially in:
- Chloride-containing environments
- Acidic systems
- Sour gas service
It improves:
- Pitting corrosion resistance
- Crevice corrosion resistance
- Resistance to chloride attack
Without sufficient molybdenum, the material behaves closer to SS304, not true SS316L.
ASTM A240 Requirement for SS316L
According to ASTM A240, SS316L must contain:
- Molybdenum (Mo): 2.0 – 2.5%
Any material below 2.0%:
- Is not compliant with ASTM A240
- Should not be considered true SS316L
- Carries a high corrosion risk
Yet in the market, some suppliers offer low-Mo material labeled as:
- “SS316 equivalent”
- “316 grade”
- “economy 316L”
These are not the same material.
What Happens When Mo Content Is Too Low
In real industrial conditions, insufficient molybdenum leads to rapid failure.
Typical aggressive environments:
- Seawater or high-chloride cooling water
- Sulfuric acid systems
- Hydrochloric acid environments
- Sour gas (H₂S) units
- Amine treating systems
- Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers
Failure mechanism:
- Localized pitting starts
- Corrosion propagates rapidly
- Mechanical strength decreases
- Packing structure collapses
- Tower blockage occurs
Once pitting begins, it cannot be reversed.
Real Service Life Comparison
In applications such as sour water stripping or amine absorption:
- Low Mo material (<2.0%)→ visible pitting within 6–12 months
- True SS316L (Mo ≥2.0%)→ service life 3–5 years or longer
This is not a small difference. It is a multi-year reliability gap.
Where Mo ≥2.0% Is Critical
SS316L with verified molybdenum content is essential in:
Application
Environment
Reason
Sour water stripper
H₂S, NH₃, chlorides
Prevent pitting corrosion
Amine unit
CO₂, H₂S
Resist chemical degradation
Crude distillation overhead
Chlorides, organic acids
Avoid under-deposit corrosion
Seawater cooling systems
High chlorides
Ensure long-term stability
FGD scrubbers
Low pH, sulfites, chlorides
Extend service life
These applications are widely found in refineries and chemical plants across the USA, Europe, Middle East, and Southeast Asia.
The Cost of Using Low-Grade Material
Low-molybdenum packing may appear cheaper, typically saving 10–15% upfront.
However, failure leads to:
- Replacement of packing
- Tower shutdown
- Production loss
- Maintenance and labor cost
Over a 5-year period, the real cost is often:
👉 2–3 times higher than using proper SS316L
How Pingxiang Daier Verifies Mo Content
At Pingxiang Daier Separation Tech (D-A-I-E-R), material verification is controlled at batch level.
We ensure:
- Molybdenum content ≥2.0% (typically ≥2.1%)
- Compliance with ASTM A240
- Full traceability for each order
Each shipment includes:
- Material Test Report (MTR) showing actual Mo percentage
- Batch photos with dimensional verification
- Inspection records
- ISO 9001:2015 documentation
We do not rely on supplier claims. We verify and document material composition.
DAIER Engineering Position
Pingxiang Daier Separation Tech is a manufacturer with:
- 17+ years of experience (Since 2009)
- Export to 100+ countries
- OEM / ODM capability
- Engineering-based material selection
We do not sell “316-like material”.
We supply verified SS316L tower packing designed for real industrial conditions.
Conclusion
If your process involves:
- Chlorides
- Acids
- Sour gas
Then molybdenum content is not optional.
👉 Mo ≥2.0% is the baseline for real SS316L performance
Anything less is a risk.
