Plastic Structured Packing RFQs: Which Project Data Affect Both Price and Manufacturability?
Plastic structured packing may be used in:
scrubbers, cooling systems, air pollution control, water treatment, and other mass-transfer equipment.
Because it is lightweight and corrosion resistant, buyers may assume that quotation is straightforward.
In reality, plastic structured packing has its own procurement variables.
First Define the Construction
Plastic structured packing can be supplied in different forms and geometries.
The RFQ should identify:
packing type, nominal surface area or model, material, and tower size.
If a supplier-specific equivalent is acceptable, the technical offer should state its geometry and performance basis.
Material Is More Than “Plastic”
The buyer should state whether the required material is:
PP, PVC, CPVC, PVDF, or another polymer.
If there are special requirements such as:
virgin resin, UV stabilization, conductivity, or color,
they should be stated separately.
Temperature Affects Both Material and Mechanical Design
Large plastic structured packing elements may lose stiffness as temperature increases.
Therefore, operating and design temperature can influence:
material selection, element construction, and support arrangement.
This information should be available before the supplier commits to a design.
Chemical Environment
The RFQ should identify actual process chemistry.
A polymer selected for one acid service should not automatically be assumed suitable for another solvent, oxidizer, or high-temperature chemical system.
Tower Diameter and Bed Height
As with metal structured packing, the supplier needs:
actual tower ID and required packed height.
These determine:
element diameter, layer count, and total volume.
Manway Access
Plastic elements may be lighter than metal ones, but they still need to pass through the vessel opening.
Manway size therefore remains a fabrication requirement.
Thermal Expansion
Large polymeric components can experience greater thermal expansion than metallic internals.
The supplier may therefore need to account for:
clearance and support arrangement.
Procurement should not specify zero-clearance fit unless the design explicitly requires it.
Support Scope
Plastic structured packing may be installed on:
plastic, FRP, or metallic supports.
The buyer should clarify whether the support is:
existing, separately supplied, or included in the quotation.
Packaging
Plastic structured packing can deform if compressed improperly during shipping.
The supplier should therefore provide a packaging approach that preserves element geometry.
Cheap freight packing that damages the structure can eliminate any purchase-price advantage.

A price based only on m³ and polymer name should normally be treated as preliminary.
