How to Specify PVC Tower Packing Material Without Writing Only “PVC”
PVC is used for certain corrosion-resistant tower packing and internals.
But “PVC” is a broad procurement description.
A serious specification should define the material sufficiently to prevent substitution with an unsuitable formulation.
PVC Product Form Matters
PVC can be used in:
- molded random packing;
- fabricated sheets;
- profiles;
- pipe components.
Different formulations and manufacturing processes may be used for each.
Therefore, the RFQ should identify the actual component being purchased, not simply the polymer family.
Rigid vs Flexible Material
Tower packing normally requires a rigid structural form.
Flexible PVC formulations contain plasticizers that may not be appropriate for the same service.
Where relevant, the specification should identify the required rigid PVC formulation.
The supplier should not be left to infer this from the product name alone.
Service Conditions Should Be Provided
Material suitability depends on:
- chemical composition;
- concentration;
- temperature;
- exposure duration.
The supplier should therefore receive the actual process environment.
A generic PVC chemical-resistance table should not replace project-specific review.
Temperature Needs Particular Attention
PVC has different service-temperature limitations from PP, CPVC, PVDF, or metals.
The purchase specification should identify both:
- normal operating temperature;
- maximum relevant temperature.
A material that is chemically resistant may still be unsuitable mechanically if temperature is too high.
Additives Are Part of the Formulation
PVC normally contains formulation additives.
Depending on manufacturing method, these may include:
- stabilizers;
- processing aids;
- pigments.
Therefore, “100% pure PVC” may not be technically meaningful wording.
The buyer should instead define the required material grade and any restricted substances relevant to the project.
Recycled Material
If recycled PVC is not acceptable, the procurement specification should say so.
As with PP, this is separate from the basic polymer designation.
The supplier may be required to declare:
- virgin resin use;
- allowable regrind;
- material source.
Material Identification
Depending on project requirements, documentation may include:
- manufacturer datasheet;
- material declaration;
- batch record;
- chemical-resistance information.
The required documentation should be established before production.
Avoid Visual Identification
Gray, white, or blue plastic does not prove that the material is PVC.
Different polymers can be pigmented similarly.
Receiving inspection should rely on approved documentation and supplier traceability rather than color alone.
Fabricated PVC Internals
For welded or fabricated PVC internals, material control should also include:
- welding rod;
- sheet grade;
- pipe grade;
- adhesive where applicable.
All components should be suitable for the intended chemical service.
