How to Specify Conductive or Antistatic Plastic Tower Packing
Most plastic tower packing is electrically insulating.
In some services, however, static-charge management may be part of the process safety philosophy.
This can lead to requests for:
- conductive plastic packing;
- antistatic packing;
- electrically modified polymer internals.
Such requests require more precise procurement language than simply writing:

“Conductive” and “Antistatic” Are Not Identical Terms
These words may be used loosely in commercial discussions.
But they can correspond to different electrical-performance ranges and different project requirements.
Therefore, the RFQ should identify the required property using a measurable electrical criterion where possible.
The project safety engineer should define this requirement.
The packing supplier should not invent it.
Modified Polymer Is Not Standard PP
Conductive or antistatic behavior is generally achieved through:
- conductive additives;
- carbon-based fillers;
- specialty formulations.
This means the material is no longer simply standard unmodified PP.
The specification should therefore identify both:
- base polymer;
- required electrical behavior.
Ask for Actual Electrical Data
A supplier description such as “ESD grade” may not be enough.
The buyer may need data such as:
- surface resistivity;
- volume resistivity;
- test method;
- conditioning conditions.
The required parameter depends on the project specification.
Verify Chemical Compatibility
Conductive additives can change the polymer formulation.
Therefore, the modified material should be reviewed for compatibility with:
- process chemicals;
- temperature;
- mechanical requirements.
It should not be assumed that a conductive version has exactly the same behavior as standard PP.
Geometry May Change
Filled polymers can process differently during injection molding.
This may affect:
- shrinkage;
- stiffness;
- mold filling;
- dimensional consistency.
If a standard packing design is converted to conductive material, the manufacturer should verify that the geometry remains acceptable.
Color Is Often Different
Conductive formulations are frequently dark or black because of conductive additives.
However, appearance is not an electrical acceptance test.
A black packing should not automatically be considered conductive.
Likewise, electrical performance should be verified through appropriate data.
Grounding Is a System Issue
Conductive packing alone does not automatically create a complete static-control system.
The equipment design may also need:
- electrical continuity;
- grounding;
- conductive support components;
- appropriate vessel connections.
These are system-level engineering questions.
The packing supplier should not be treated as solely responsible unless that scope is specifically assigned.
Documentation
A procurement package may request:
- resin datasheet;
- electrical-property data;
- test certificate;
- supplier declaration;
- batch verification.
The appropriate level depends on process safety requirements.
Avoid Substituting Standard Black PP
A visually similar black PP product may be cheaper.
But pigmentation alone does not demonstrate antistatic or conductive performance.
The procurement specification should explicitly prohibit substitution with ordinary pigmented resin where electrical properties are required.
