Plastic tower packing is usually selected based on process conditions inside the equipment.
But before installation—or in some special equipment configurations—the material may also be exposed to sunlight.
This creates a procurement issue that is frequently missed:
Does the polymer need ultraviolet stabilization?
Separate Process Exposure from Storage Exposure
A plastic packing may spend its operating life inside an opaque vessel and receive no sunlight.
However, it may be stored outdoors for:
- weeks;
- months;
- a project delay period.
The packaging itself may also allow sunlight exposure.
Therefore, procurement should consider both:
- operating environment;
- storage environment.
UV Resistance Is Not Automatic
Standard PP or other polymers are not automatically optimized for prolonged outdoor exposure.
UV radiation can contribute to polymer degradation over time.
The required level of protection depends on:

Do Not Confuse UV Resistance with Chemical Resistance
UV stabilization does not automatically improve resistance to:

- alkalis;
