Visual Defect Acceptance Criteria for Stamped Metal Random Packing

Visual inspection is one of the fastest ways to identify poor metal random packing production.

It is also one of the most subjective.

Terms such as:

good workmanship,no defects,orhigh quality

provide little help when buyer and supplier disagree about what is acceptable.

A better approach is to define defects by their functional consequence.

Severe Deformation

A packing element that has been heavily crushed or flattened may lose the intended open geometry.

This can affect:

bulk packing behavior, void space, and installation.

Severe deformation should therefore be separated from normal small shape variation caused by forming.

Incomplete Forming

Stamped internal tabs or windows may occasionally fail to form correctly.

If important structural features remain:

closed, folded incorrectly, or missing,

the product may no longer represent the approved geometry.

This is a functional defect.

Burrs

Metal stamping naturally creates edges.

The question is not whether any microscopic burr exists.

The question is whether the burr is excessive enough to:

create unsafe handling, produce loose metal fragments, or materially alter the product.

A “zero burr” requirement can be unrealistic unless a special finishing process is specified.

Cracks and Tears

Cracks around heavily formed areas can indicate excessive forming stress or material problems.

Small marks and actual material tears should not be treated as the same thing.

Structural tears that can propagate or release fragments are more serious.

Collapsed Openings

The openings in random packing are part of its functional geometry.

If production or transport causes them to collapse substantially, the packing should be reviewed even if the outside diameter appears correct.

Oil and Contamination

Manufacturing oils or foreign matter may be unacceptable for certain processes.

The required cleanliness level should depend on service.

A general scrubber project and a high-purity chemical process should not automatically use the same cleanliness requirement.

Rust-Like Surface Marks

Stainless steel can show surface contamination or discoloration without necessarily representing bulk alloy corrosion.

The inspector should distinguish:

surface contamination from true material degradation.

Where necessary, cleaning or further material review can be required.

Mixed Product

One package containing visibly different:

sizes, geometries, or sheet gauges

can indicate production-lot mixing.

This deserves investigation even if each individual piece looks usable.

Defect Classification

For practical inspection, defects can be divided into:

critical defects affecting material identity or serious functionality,

major defects affecting geometry or structural integrity,

and minor cosmetic defects with no meaningful operational consequence.

This creates more realistic acceptance than requiring visual perfection.
