How to Inspect Plastic Random Packing for Flash, Warpage and Incomplete Molding

Plastic random packing inspection requires a different approach from metal packing.

The primary manufacturing process is usually injection molding.

The most important visual issues therefore come from:

mold filling, cooling, ejection, and resin consistency.

Inspect Complete Formation

Every packing element should preserve the intended:

walls, ribs, windows, and internal structural features.

A short-shot part with incomplete molding may look minor but can have:

reduced strength and changed geometry.

Incomplete structural features are therefore more important than minor cosmetic marks.

Flash

Thin flash along a mold parting line may be common.

The inspector should determine whether it:

Gate Remnants

A gate mark is a normal result of injection molding.

It becomes a quality issue when the remnant is:

excessively large, sharp, weakly attached, or likely to break loose.

Color Consistency

Color differences can indicate:

different resin batches, pigment variation, or mixed production.

Color variation alone does not necessarily mean the product is unusable.

However, unexpected differences within one lot should prompt a material traceability check.

Contamination

Inspect for:

metal particles, foreign polymer, excessive dirt, oil, or other contamination.

The required cleanliness depends on the final service.

Simple Handling Check

A sample of packing can be handled normally to identify:

unexpected brittleness or loose fragments.

This is not a substitute for a formal mechanical test, but it can reveal obvious molding problems.

Sample Across Production Lots

Plastic packing orders may be produced over several molding shifts or resin batches.

Inspection should therefore sample more than one package or pallet.
